Golf Putting Tips That Will Lower Your Score

There is a very true saying in golf, "drive for show, and putt for dough."

As any golfer knows, that is very true because a missed two-foot put will cost you as many strokes as a 300-yard drive.

Golf putting tips can help you lower your score quickly.

If you are suffering from the "yips", these golf putting tips can help you get into a routine and hopefully help or completely eliminate them.

The first thing you should know when you are working to improve your putting is the local knowledge of the greens.

This is very helpful when you are trying to find the line on your putt.

What I mean by this is lets say you are playing at an unfamiliar course and on the east side of the course is a lake.

Before you go out, ask the pro staff about the greens and I’ll bet you find out that most of the greens will tend to break in the direction of the lake.

When reading the line of the putt try to keep in mind where the sun is. This will help you determine both the break and the speed of the putt. Grass on the green will grow toward the sun so if the sun is to your left as your putt slows down while getting closer to the hole it will die off towards the left. To help determine the speed of the green, knowing where the sun is becomes very helpful.

If the sun is at your back and the hole is in front of you, the grass is then growing towards you, which means you will be putting into the grain and that translates into less speed. If you are putting with the grain, that putt will be much faster. A little tip with this is, if you are look at your putt and the green looks "shiny", you are putting with the grain, if it looks like a dull green, you are putting into the grain.

Some of the golf putting tips I have received turned out to not be very useful but one tip that helped my stroke was learning how to properly square up to the putt. Most golfers will walk up to the putt and get their feet set first and then get the putter head behind the ball.

When you do it this way, you can end up with an open or closed stance that will not allow the ball to come off your putter squarely. So when you are lining up your putt, put your putter head down first, get it aligned with the hole, then bring your feet in squarely to the putter head.

Hopefully, these golf putting tips will get you rolling the ball more consistently and help you get a good read on the greens. And remember - never leave a birdie putt short!
